Student Success
BCCHS Upstanders
What is an Upstander?
A person who speaks or acts in support of an individual or cause, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being attacked or bullied. Often this person does what is right rather than what is easy.
We believe every student can become an Upstander, whether by challenging negative stereotypes with family, standing up to a bully in their school, or encouraging civil discourse when neighbors disagree.
Each of us can participate as citizens to create a more humane, just, and compassionate world.
We would like to honor and recognize our students who trade the comfort of fitting in, for the dignity of standing up. We can't do everything, but we can do something.
*Every month, teachers, counselors, and staff are encouraged to nominate someone they believe displays Upstander qualities. A picture of the student, along with a description of their Upstander qualities, is displayed on a bulletin board on campus for the Birmingham Community to view and appreciate.
Student Recognition Lists
Student Achievement Lists
At the end of each grading period, students are recognized for their academic achievement or improvement. Improvement is calculated based on the comparison of the student's current report card and the previous one.
Most Improved Lists are important to us as they demonstrate our values: incorporating a growth mindset into the school culture and helping students prioritize growth and improvement.
The current recognition lists:
- Platinum List - 4.0 GPA or higher
- Gold List - 3.6 GPA to 3.99 GPA
- Silver List - 3.0 GPA to 3.59 GPA
- Most Improved List - Improvement of 0.3 GPA points from the First Progress Report Card and Second Progress Report Card.
