Wellness Committee

Annual Assessment and Update:

Our school’s Local School Wellness Policy (LSWP) is assessed and updated annually using the School Health Index (SHI), a self-assessment tool developed by Action for Healthy Kids. Throughout the school year, the Wellness Committee meets multiple times to complete the annual process, which includes assessing the policy, setting goals and targets, implementing programs and activities, and evaluating their effectiveness. Toward the end of each school year, the updated LSWP is presented to the governing board for approval. If you want to be more actively involved, we encourage you to participate in Wellness Committee meetings, which are announced in advance on ParentSquare.

Local School Wellness Policy

Birmingham recognizes the significant relationship between student health and academic achievement. BCCHS is committed to the overall wellness of our students and our community. It is our goal to promote student health, prevent childhood obesity, and combat problems associated with poor nutrition and physical inactivity. BCCHS has developed a Wellness Policy that is focused on improving the health of students. The policy was developed by the Wellness Committee which includes representatives of all stakeholder groups. Click here for LSWP

Annual School Health Index (SHI) Report

For the school year 2023-2024, Birmingham scored 72.2% on the SHI, which is a ten-percentage point decrease from the 81%-82% scores earned during the previous three years. This is mainly attributable to the elimination of the standalone Health course for 9th graders and the decision to embed Health topics in the double-block Biology curriculum.

Areas of strength include School Health, Nutrition, and Social and Emotional Climate. Challenges remain outstanding among the categories of Physical Education and Physical Activity, Family Involvement, and Staff Wellness.  Click here for SHI

 Annual Student Wellness Survey

Each year, Birmingham conducts a survey to assess the needs of the whole child, identify students requiring additional support, and guide collaborative efforts among the school, community partners, and families to ensure every student thrives. For the 2024-2025 school year, Birmingham implemented a combined Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and Student Needs Assessment Survey. The SDQ is a brief behavioral screening tool that evaluates 25 psychological attributes, offering valuable insight into a child's overall well-being. The goal is to administer the survey twice a year—once at the start of the fall semester and again at the beginning of the spring semester—to monitor student emotional growth and evolving needs over time. The results of the needs assessment are used by the Community Schools Coordinator to inform the planning and implementation of programs that foster the academic, social-emotional, physical, and civic development of our students.

Triennial Assessment of Wellness Policy

The Triennial Assessment of Birmingham’s Wellness Policy has been completed. A slide presentation which documents and explains the assessment process and summarizes the results has been shared with community stakeholder groups. The presentation highlights Birmingham’s strengths and opportunities for growth. Using the School Health Index and WellSAT 3.0 assessment tools to evaluate our program, we have confirmed that BCCHS has achieved significant program growth in the last three years. The results call attention to BCCHS’ nutrition program, which operates at the highest levels of USDA and CDE compliance. Also, Birmingham has made great gains in implementing wellness initiatives including an emphasis on social-emotional learning and mental health supports. The slide presentation concludes with the Wellness Annual Action Plan which was approved by the school governing board on  June 29, 2024.

Birmingham continues to focus on increasing the participation of students and families in shared decision-making. Currently, the school is seeking interested students, families, and staff who would like to join the Wellness Committee. Please contact Wendy Bader, Coordinator, to indicate your interest and ask any questions relating to Birmingham’s Wellness Policy.
